BioAbout Me: 23, studying law at Queen's University after teaching English in Taiwan and receiving a BA in Political Science and Classics at the University of Alberta which I now miss like crazy, speak fluent English, French and Spanish, conversational German and learning Irish, horrible case of wanderlust, blue eyes, red hair, short petite short, Irish/French-Canadian, waterbaby, Slytherclaw (though heavily to the Ravenclaw side), love reading, everything else can be gleaned from my Interests below. About the Username: It comes from the ancient Irish national epic, the Táin Bó Cúalnge (pronounced toyn bo cooley and means "The Cattle Raid of Cooley" in English). Queen Medb (pronounced may-ve) of Connaught gets into an argument with her husband, King Ailill (pronouned aye-leel) because he believed that Medb was better off after she married him than before. She dissents, claiming that she was the fairest and richest of the King of Connaught's daughters and so they compare possessions. They are equal in all except that Ailill has a bull better than all of Medb's. She therefore gathers an army in order to gain possession of the most famous bull in Ireland, which is the property of Daire (pronouned dare-ah), a chieftain of Ulster. Because the men of Ulster are afflicted by a debilitating curse, the seventeen-year-old Cuchulain (pronouned cu-hu-lin) must defend Ulster single-handedly. Medb negotiates a "peace" between Ulster and Connaught but ultimately Cuchulain dies and Medb has her vengeance. She was promiscuous which marks her as a goddess, symbolic of the fertility of Ireland. She is the personification of the land itself and its prosperity and was able to shape shift, run very fast and deprive men of their strength simply by her presence. As the goddess of sovereignty, Medb also is a deity of death and brings about the death of Cuchulain and of her own husband Ailill, infuriated by his infidelity. Whew. How's that for Irish Mythology 101?
About the Livejournal: Although I've been a reader of fanfiction for a long time, and have dabbled in writing, I was hesitant to start one of these and become involved in the fandom. It seemed too political and elitist. But after browsing many journals and writers, I realised that there are some very talented and interesting people that don't pay any attention to that kind of thing. So I'm giving it a shot. This is a fandom journal with a good mix of real life too. Anything not strictly fandom (picspams, reviews, recs, etc.) is flocked. Because I am a paranoid net user. Thanks for visiting.
